**The difficulties of being lost at sea**
Being lost at sea can be a frightening experience. With no land in sight, people may face hunger, thirst, exhaustion and exposure to severe weather. Uncertainty about rescue can also create loneliness and despair. These difficulties involve both physical needs and emotional strain.
Accounts of survivors describe different experiences. Some people used available equipment to signal for help, collected rainwater or supported their companions. Others tried to maintain a daily routine while waiting for rescue. Such accounts describe what particular people did; they are not a complete guide to maritime safety.
Not everyone survived. Some people succumbed to illness or exposure before help arrived. Equipment, weather, rescue opportunities and many other circumstances affected the outcome. Effort alone did not guarantee survival.
These experiences show the limits as well as the strength of human endurance. They also help explain why survivors’ stories should be read carefully: one successful experience cannot establish what will happen in every emergency.
