**Two examples of urbanisation**
The following historical figures describe urbanisation during the periods stated; they are not current population statistics.
The source describes rapid urban growth in Malaysia from the early 1970s. Around 26 per cent of the population lived in urban areas at the beginning of that period. The urban and rural populations were almost equal in the early 1990s. The urban share then rose from 66 per cent in 2004 to 74 per cent in 2014. These figures illustrate a substantial change in where people lived.
Australia is described as an example of earlier urbanisation, with over 60 per cent of the population already living in urban areas at the end of the nineteenth century. Later growth was also linked to the country’s immigration policy, which encouraged people to settle in its coastal urban areas. The passage identifies Sydney and Melbourne as Australia’s two largest cities. It does not say that urban growth followed exactly the same timetable in both countries.
